With arch-rivals Liverpool next up, Ten Hoag has backed himself to revive Manchester United

Manchester United’s new manager Erik ten Hoag says he is confident he can revive the struggling Premier League side’s fortunes despite losing their opening two games of the season.

England’s most successful club have failed to win the trophy in the last five years and currently only West Ham United – who have played three and lost three – are below United in the standings.

Despite the humiliating start and the club’s struggles to bring in many of the players Ten Hoag wants to strengthen his squad, the Dutchman insists he is undeterred by the scale of the task he faces.

“I’m here to help the club and revive the club,” ten Hoag told reporters ahead of Monday’s home game against a Liverpool side that also got off to a stuttering start.

“I wanted this challenge. I already knew it was difficult, but I wanted it, because in my career, everywhere I started, the beginning was difficult, but I finished it and I was convinced [will] Complete here as well.

“That’s why I chose the project and I know it’s a process. I stick to the plan and the philosophy we have. I believe in the contribution I have in the team around me as well as the players like the coaches and directors.

United were beaten 4-0 by Brentford Last week, and following the defeat, Ten Haag canceled a day off for the team and scheduled an extra training session.

“I made that decision on Saturday. When I saw the performance during the game, it wasn’t the norm for Manchester United and it wasn’t my norm,” the Dutchman said.

“We have to change that and I have to teach the team and the players what that standard is.”
