Exercising at the gym is definitely a good habit, but it’s important to recognize your limits and make sure you can take it easy and not push yourself.

Comedian Raju Srivastav suffered a heart attack while exercising at a gym in Delhi and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors are trying their best to save him but his condition remains critical. A rise in the number of such cases in recent years has fueled debate over whether vigorous exercise increases heart attack risk.

Speaking to Indian Express, Professor K Srinath Reddy, Cardiologist, Epidemiologist and President of Public Health Foundation India (PHFI), explained that sudden cardiac arrest during exercise or heavy physical activity is more likely to be caused by pre-existing obstructions in the heart, diagnosed or undiagnosed.

Obstructions in the heart are caused by cells and cholesterol particles breaking through the barrier of endothelial cells and infiltrating the lining of the artery. This results in the formation of a bump called plaque in the artery.

Prof Reddy said excessive physical activity can “trigger plaque rupture or electrical disturbances in the heart” which can lead to heart failure.

However, this does not mean that exercise is not a healthy practice. People who follow a good lifestyle and keep a check on their diet can follow their regular routine and go to the gym.

If you’re a regular gym-goer and have a history of heart conditions, here are things to keep in mind to keep your heart attack risk under control:

  • As someone who participates in extensive physical activity at the gym, it is important to consume a nutrient-dense diet that meets the body’s needs. Avoid eating oily or junk food.
  • Practice breathing exercises to regulate your blood flow and relax your body during intense exercise sessions.
  • Skip the gym when you’re sick or feeling unwell. Pushing yourself to the gym on such days can put you at greater risk.
  • Exercise according to your physical abilities. Everyone’s body has its own capabilities and must go through the process. Competing with others without recognizing your body’s potential can harm your health.

Along with these measures, regular health checkups must be undertaken to track your heart health to avoid the risk of cardiac arrest.
