India opened their campaign with a blockbuster match against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, the team has enough firepower to do well in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.
After winning the inaugural edition in 2007, India’s record in the global T20 event has been sub-par.
“I think we have enough strength. We are a good team, if you get to the semis it could be anybody’s tournament.
“So the effort is to start well, reach the semis and then you have enough strength to win the cup,” said Shastri.
Asked how big a hit Bumrah’s absence would be, the former India captain and commentator said, “Bumrah not being there, Jadeja not being there, it’s a hindrance on the one hand but also an opportunity to unearth a new champion. “Playing a lot of cricket, people can get injured easily but you can’t do anything about injury.”
On replacing Mohammed Shami, Shastri said, “India has been a lot (in Australia) in six years and he has been an integral part of all those tours and that experience counts.”
Shastri arrived in the city on Thursday to inaugurate the Coaching Beyond Cricket Academy at Lalaji Memorial Omega International School.
Shastri, B. Arun and R. Coaching Beyond founded by Sridhar also has a center in Hyderabad.
After the encounter against Pakistan at the MCG on October 23, they will play a qualifier in Sydney on October 27, South Africa in Perth on October 30, Bangladesh in Adelaide on November 2 and Bangladesh on November 6. (vs. Qualifier in Melbourne)
