For those of us trying to get fit, letting our guard down during the holiday season means giving up months of effort in terms of dieting and exercise. Resisting these sugary delights requires enormous willpower, which is why holiday weight gain is so common. Here are some tips on how to eat smart during the festive season to keep your health in check.
1. Avoid going out on an empty stomach
If you plan to go out, avoid leaving on an empty stomach. Before you go out, have a light breakfast. Boiled corn, mixed vegetable salad, fruit bowl, sprouts, vegetable soup, yogurt with crushed nuts, whole wheat bread sandwiches, etc. It keeps you full and prevents you from overeating/overeating while out.
2. Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day. It will keep you hydrated and satisfy your hunger pangs.
3. Choose healthy desserts
Opt for dry fruits, shrikhand (made with hung curd), dark chocolates, til or peanut chickies, gond ka ladoo and other sugar-free sweets. Those made with jaggery or organic honey are also good.
4. Compensation
Saying “no” when your loved ones offer you dessert can be challenging, especially this festive season. don’t worry Pick one, take your time eating it and enjoy the experience. Now you know what to do next. Use your next meal to compensate for your increased calorie consumption. Salads and vegetables are high in fiber and high in protein and low in carbohydrates.
5. Be a health-conscious host
Offer snacks like idlis, roasted chaklis, sprout-chaat, masala peanuts, unsalted nuts and dry fruits. Do not offer soft drinks or juice substitutes. Good substitutes include lemon juice, jal jeera, masala buttermilk, flavored milk, fresh fruit juices, etc.
6. Remind yourself to exercise
Exercise speeds up your body’s metabolism and helps you burn calories faster. It is better to work out before going to the party. You burn more calories when you eat at a party because of a faster metabolism.
