After the Spanish cities of Barcelona and Majorca introduced fines for wearing bikinis or being topless, Italy’s Sorrento also introduced stricter rules and heavy fines for tourists. Italy’s picture-perfect cliff-top town is a tourist hotspot.
Sorrento is a popular coastal town in southwestern Italy. It faces the Bay of Naples on the Sorrentine Peninsula and offers a dramatic view of the coastline. It is common to find “scantily clad” people on the beach.
The town’s mayor believes that banning skin shows will improve the quality of life in this popular tourist destination. Citing “inconvenience and discomfort”, Mayor Massimo Coppola introduced a new dress code banning tourists from wearing bikinis or walking topless, regardless of their gender.
Taking to social media, Coppola wrote, “No more rude behavior. That’s why I signed an ordinance banning swimming suits and going bare-chested.
“These types of behaviors can cause inconvenience and inconvenience to Sorrento residents and tourists,” he said. His concern is that biking clothed and going topless has affected the quality of life of residents “with its image and the consequences of tourism”.
The police have been empowered to collect fines from violators. An Italian magazine reported that tourists violating the bikini ban could be fined up to 500 euros (about Rs 40,000). Warning boards have been put up at various places in the town to warn tourists about the new rules.
