The first batch will leave Mumbai early on Sunday and reach Cali, the venue of the championships, the same night after a 28-hour journey via Amsterdam and Bogota.
“There are ten athletes in the first batch,” an Athletics Federation of India official said on Saturday evening. The government has cleared 33 athletes and 11 officials for the August 6 Worlds, but it was not clear on Saturday whether the entire team would make the trip.
Quartermillers Priya H. Mohan, Rupal and Kapil are among the first batch flying and they have their first event 4x400m mixed relay on Monday evening.
Last year, the Indian team won bronze at the Under-20 Worlds Mixed Relay held in Nairobi. But with countries like the USA, Great Britain, Germany and Australia skipping the 2021 edition this year, the competition will be tougher this time around.
Till Friday night, it was not clear whether the Indian athletes would be able to make it to Cali. They were very agitated in New Delhi, but by Saturday evening most of them started going to Mumbai.
