Team members will be my main challengers: Paul

If this year’s performance list in the Commonwealth region is any indication, India should win all the men’s triple jump medals in Birmingham.

The top four positions are occupied by Indians and three of them – Commonwealth leader Abdullah Abubakar (17.19m), no. 2 Praveen Chitravel (17.18) and no. 4 Eldos Paul (16.99) – Participates in Commonwealth Games.

But that’s how things work in the majors, and recent Worlds have provided some valuable lessons on that.

Paul, still 25 and yet to clear 17m, made the biggest move in Oregon, becoming the first Indian triple jumper to enter a Worlds final and finishing ninth with 16.79m.

Finishing behind Navyman were world champion Christian Taylor (16.48, qualifying) and multiple Olympic medalist Will Clay (16.54, final).

“Those were fanboy moments for me, I learned a lot from them,” Paul said in the chat. The Hindu From Birmingham on Friday.

Forced to count

Paul believes that Indians will be a force to reckon with at the Commonwealth Games.

“Medal chances are higher here compared to other championships. And I think my teammates will be my main challenge. But it’s not about 17m or 18, it’s about consistency and the overall experience,” he said.

“International events are very different from nationals. Worlds gave me valuable experience. If I can repeat that body position here, I can win a medal.

Five Commonwealth triple jumpers, including three Indians, have qualified for the Worlds.

A quick look at the Birmingham entry list suggests England’s Ben Williams (17.27m personal best) could be the top man. But Williams failed to even clear 16 meters at Worlds, finishing 26th overall.

A big jump is required

The signs look good for India, but Asian Games champion Arpinder Singh, the last triple jumper to win a Commonwealth Games medal (bronze, Glasgow 2014) will need a big jump to win gold in Birmingham.

“A minimum of 17.20 meters for gold and between 16.50 to 16.70 for bronze,” said Aripinder. “Our jumpers are in good form and Eldos is very consistent, I am sure we will win a medal.”
