Spain Announces Free Journeys From September

Amid rising inflation in the country, the Spanish government announced free travel on trains for limited distances from September. Passengers are allowed to travel on trains across the country and there is no cost to both tourists and locals.

According to CNN, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said multi-journey tickets for trains operated by the network’s public services Cercanías, Rodalís and Media Distance will be free from September 1 until the end of the year. Free travel is available for local and medium distance travel.

According to a Transport Ministry statement, the move was taken to encourage maximum use of public transport to ensure essential daily travel through safe, reliable, comfortable, economical and sustainable modes of transport. The government has taken this decision against the backdrop of increasing fuel and fuel prices in the country.

However, the program is not available on single-journey commuter trains, trains operated by private companies or long-distance routes.

The program is applicable for multi-trip journeys on commuter trains or medium-distance routes, but it covers popular tourist destinations in the country. This is good news for travelers who want to visit Spain at the end of the year. There are free journeys covering tourist destinations from Leon to Madrid, Granada to Malaga, Cordoba to Seville, Madrid to Toledo, Barcelona to Tarragona, A Coruña to Santiago and Valencia to Requena Utial. The soon-to-be free train journeys for four months will cost under 20 euros depending on the distance.

The measure is in addition to discounts previously announced by the Spanish government. In June, the government allowed discounts of 30 to 50 percent on all public transport systems, including trams, buses and metros.

Spain is not the only European country to cut the cost of public transport this year. In May, Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s national railways, also announced a nine-euro-a-month ticket program. Passengers can use this policy on local or regional trains till the end of August.
