South African all-rounder Dwayne Pretorius has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series in India and the upcoming T20 World Cup with a fractured left thumb, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said on Thursday.
The pace bowling all-rounder, who was South Africa’s top wicket-taker in last year’s T20 World Cup, was injured during the third T20I against India at Indore — his only match of the series.
He returned with 3 for 26, a 1-2 result in India’s favor as South Africa won by 49 runs.
“The nature of the injury requires surgical intervention and Cricket South Africa will consult a designated hand surgeon when Dwayne arrives in South Africa,” CSA Chief Medical Officer Dr Shuaib Manjra said.

“Usual rehabilitation procedures will be followed for him to return to playing cricket soon,” Manjra said.
Marco Janssen, who is also in their T20 World Cup reserves list, has been included in South Africa’s ODI squad and it remains to be seen whether he will also make the cut for the showpiece in Australia from October 16.
Middle-order batsman Rassi van der Dussen was ruled out of the T20 World Cup earlier with a broken finger.
