  • India lost 0-1 in a must-win game against Spain
  • India did not reach the World Cup quarter-finals
  • Rasquinha notes things to improve for the women’s team

Former Indian men’s team captain Viren Rasquinha on Monday expressed his disappointment after the national women’s hockey team failed to make it to the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup.

The Indian women’s team suffered a shock 0-1 loss to Spain in the crossover match on Sunday. A disappointed Rasquinha came out in support of the women’s side and scrutinized the team.

Rasquinha, CEO of Olympic Gold Quest, shared the positives and things the women’s team needs to improve.

“Losing 0-1 to Spain and missing the QF of #HWC2022 is very disappointing. Women’s hockey team needs our support now. It will take at least a decade to become a consistent world top 4 team. Belgium or Indian men. My advice – 1/ 6 Stay strong,” Rasquinha tweeted.

“I tried to analyze the overall performance calmly and look at the positives and things to improve. Positives: 1. Great overall fitness & work rate; 2. Decent organization in defence; 3. Great individual skills; 4. World class keeper; 5. 2/6 Able to maintain a high tempo throughout.

“Things to improve: 1. Hockey is all about scoring. If you don’t score, it’s very difficult to survive 60 minutes; 2. PCs – More sharpness between pusher, stopper & flicker. More probability to score 3/6.

“Things to improve on. Girls 4/6.

“Things that need to be constantly improved. It’s really important when the 5/6 is out on the right pass.

“An idea: we have struggled to score goals in this World Cup, it would be a good idea to take Dhanraj Pillai for a 2-3 day workshop for our forwards only. His composure and intelligence at ‘T’ 6/6 was very good,” concluded Rasquinha. .

The Indian women’s team will face Canada in the 9th to 16th place match on July 12.
