Bhisham Sawhney’s 19th Birth Anniversary: Actor, writer and playwright Bhisham Sahni is considered one of the most distinguished voices in Hindi literature. Born on August 8, 1915 in Rawalpindi-now Pakistan, Bisham Sawhney wrote over 100 short stories and several plays. The iconic writer was also an active participant in the Quit India Movement of 1942 and settled in post-partition India.

His extraordinary works have earned him many distinguished honors such as the Shiromani Writers Award in 1979, the Padma Bhushan in 1998 and the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2002. He died on July 11, 2003.

Here are some of his famous works on his 19th birthday:

  1. tamas
    Bhisham Sahni is particularly known for his poignant and realistic work Tamas, in which he describes the aftermath of the partition of India, which he witnessed first hand. He wrote this iconic book in 1974 and won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1975. In 1986, filmmaker Govind Nihalani adapted his works into a TV series, in which Bhisham Sahni played the Sikh character Karmo. The series starred Om Puri, Pankaj Kapoor, Virendra Saxena, Amrish Puri, Surekha Sikri, Saeed Jafari and Ifthekar in prominent roles.
  2. Balraj, my brother
    Narrating the life of his elder brother and actor Balraj Sahni, Bhisham Sahni captures the fascinating personality of the Indian film and stage actor. Balraj Sahni is known for his impeccable work in Dharati Ke Lal, Do Bigha Zameen, Chhoti Bahen, Kabuliwala and Garam Hawa.
  3. Basanti
    In this 1982 fictional novel, the author narrates the story of a young village girl who comes to the big city with her family in search of a better life. The novel revolves around a girl’s struggle to find her way.
  4. Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!
    In 1984, filmmaker Saeed Akhtar, Mohan Joshi’s Hazir Ho! Bhisham Sahni has been offered the lead role in the film. This is Bhisham Sahni’s debut film. In this film, he shares screen space with Amjad Khan, Pankaj Kapoor, Deena Pathak and Naseeruddin Shah.
  5. Mr. and Mrs. Iyer
    2002, directed by Aparna Sen, Mr. and Mrs. Iyer Bhisham Sahni’s last film revolves around a Hindu woman rescuing a Muslim man when communal riots break out. The film stars Konkana Sen Sharma, Rahul Bose, Surekha Sikri and Rabi Ranjan among others.
