World Population Day has gained more importance in the past years since the devastating COVID-19 pandemic hit the world. This has made us realize how vulnerable the human population is and has inspired various actions and measures around the world aimed at fighting the pest.

Amidst such dire health emergencies, women, who are among the most vulnerable members of society, face hardships. This World Population Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the deteriorating health and rights of women in the era of COVID-19. The pandemic has exacerbated inequality, but it has also disrupted vital health care services.

While higher COVID-19 mortality rates were observed among men, women faced the economic and social consequences of the pandemic. As the world’s population has been forced to stay inside their homes, cases of domestic violence against women have increased during the lockdown. In addition, women contributed more in caring for the elderly, children or the sick at home amid the pandemic.

This World Population Day calls for providing adequate health facilities to women and reducing gender inequality.

According to the United Nations, the population will reach 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11 billion by 2100. An increase in population does not necessarily indicate a uniform increase in the condition of the people. Our population continues to face issues such as climate change, discrimination and violence, and the pandemic will add to the woes.
