A Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) official said a man was arrested with 210 kg of ganja worth Rs 4 crore in Gopoli area of Maharashtra’s Raigad district.
After receiving a tip-off about an inter-state drug smuggling gang, a team from the Mumbai NCP laid a trap and arrested the man at Kopoli on the Mumbai-Pune highway on Thursday, he said. The official added that the drugs were being transported to Mumbai and adjoining areas.
The cannabis was found in 98 packages wrapped in brown duct tape. “Ganja is sourced from Pune, the main supplier may have sourced it from the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border. Some of it was for Pune and some for areas like Govanti and Mankurt. The accused has been selling contraband in these areas for the past few years,” said the NCB official.
During interrogation, the accused said that he was involved in drug trafficking earlier. He noted that due to the seizure of some consignments seized by the agency recently, there is a high demand for the urgent supply of ganja to local paddlers in Mumbai. He bought the drug from Pune, which was sourced from a major supplier.
An investigation is underway and the man is being further interrogated about other accomplices in the syndicate.
