Mumbai Rains: Leptospirosis cases may rise

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has warned that cases of leptospirosis are likely to increase due to heavy rains in Mumbai for the past week. While a dozen cases came to light in June, five cases were reported in July. No deaths occurred due to monsoon related diseases.

BMC has warned people not to wade in standing water. “If exposed, take prophylactic treatment (such as doxycycline/azithromycin) as per medical advice,” says an advisor.

The BMC surveyed 3,44,291 households between July 7 and 9 and distributed 43,297 doxycycline tablets to adults and 114 azithromycin to children.

Among other monsoon diseases, the civic body has recorded 176 gastroenteritis, 119 malaria, 19 dengue and 23 hepatitis cases in July so far. Seven cases of influenza H1N1 (swine flu) have also been confirmed in the city.

Infectious disease specialist Dr Vasanth Nagvekar said if people with flu-like symptoms test negative for Covid-19, they should be tested for H1N1.
