India’s role important to Middle East-Indo-Pacific ties: US on PM Modi joining I2U2 summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join US President Joe Biden, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the first virtual summit of the four-nation meet – ‘I2U2’ – on Thursday.

I2U2 aims to promote joint investments in six mutually identified areas: water, energy, transport, space, health and food security. It aims to mobilize private sector capital and expertise to modernize infrastructure and low-carbon development pathways for our industries, improve public health and promote the development of critical, emerging and green technologies.

According to: US President Joe Biden launched the Indo-Pacific Trade Agreement with 12 countries including India

‘I2’ stands for India and Israel and ‘U2’ stands for the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

The global food and energy crisis arising from the Ukraine conflict will likely figure prominently in the talks, which begin around 4 p.m.

“The leaders will discuss possible joint projects and other common areas of mutual interest within the framework of ‘I2U2’ to strengthen economic partnership in trade and investment in their respective regions and beyond,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. ) said Tuesday.

Commenting on India’s participation in several intergovernmental groups, US National Security Adviser Jacob Sullivan said, “India plays an important role in the Indo-Pacific region. And it is one of the largest, most important, most strategically consequential countries in the Indo-Pacific region, so it should play a key role in our strategy, including the Quad.

“India has a very long-standing relationship and engagement with the Middle East, and not just with the Gulf countries – a relationship with Israel for many years. So, the US can play a vital and important role in helping deepen Israel’s integration in the region, and India has a role to play in that,” he said.

“So uniting Israel, India and the United Arab Emirates around an issue where all four countries have unique capabilities to bring agricultural technology to bear, leading to greater food production and mitigating the food security challenge — has been the focus of issues that have been top of mind for US foreign policymakers for the past 20 years. “It’s the kind of thing that really fulfills the president’s vision of an overall integrated, globally engaged Middle East that doesn’t pay — terrorism and wars. It’s a different approach, and it’s about expanding partnerships, expanding geographies or shrinking or shrinking,” Sullivan said.

So we are looking forward to PM Modi’s participation in this event. Just as the Quad has become a central pillar of America’s Indo-Pacific strategy, we think I2U2 will become a feature of the broader region.

The I2U2 Group was conceptualized during a meeting of foreign ministers of the four countries held on October 18 last year.

India’s bilateral strategic ties with each of the three countries have been on the rise over the past few years.
