HIT actor Rajkummar Rao talks about Burari suicide, Tandoor murder case. Says ‘I got disturbed’

Rajkummar Rao will be seen next in the Hindi remake of Telugu cop drama HIT – The First Case. The plot follows Vikram Jaisingh (played by Rajkummar), a police officer of the Telangana state’s Homicide Intervention Team (HIT), who is tasked to investigate the missing case of a young girl. Sanya Malhotra plays the female lead in the upcoming film. In an exclusive conversation with Crime Tak, Rajkummar Rao talked about the mental health of police officers and the film aims to bring about a discussion on that. He also recalled some of the most brutal crimes India witnessed in the recent past.

Rajkummar Rao said, “When I was 12-13 years old, I saw a dead body in my locality. That visual has remained within me even now because it was so traumatising. What our police officers do is very challenging; the way they solve crimes. Day and night, they have to stay within that crime, trying to solve it. They are on guard 24 hours which is not easy at all.”

The actor added, “One good thing about the film is that we also talk about the mental illness in police officers. People need to understand that being in police doesn’t necessarily mean you are a macho man. He is not always a hero. They also have their share of problems in their personal life. Through our film, we want to start this conversation.”

When asked if he remembers any crime that happened in India, Rajkummar Rao said, “There are some crimes that are still fresh in my memory. The Burari suicide case was very disturbing. I was very small when the Tandoor murder case happened. I also remember the Arushi Talwar double murder case, and the Nithari serial killings. I feel artists are very emotional beings so when I read or watch something, I get very disturbed for a few days. I start questioning humanity.”

The Burari deaths case was a terrifying incident back in 2018 where 11 members of a family in Burari, Delhi, had killed themselves. Many called it to be a case of mass suicide. Meanwhile, the Tandoor Murder case was about the Delhi Youth Congress president Sushil Sharma who burnt the body of his wife, Naina Sahni, in a tandoor after killing her. He was sentenced to death in 2003.
