If you feel tired, it could be a warning sign of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), an umbrella term for a range of liver conditions that affect people who don’t drink alcohol. A major symptom of NAFLD is excessive fat storage in the liver cells. Although it has become more common worldwide, there is little understanding of the symptoms and causes behind NAFLD.
Some people with NAFLD may also develop non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), an aggressive form of fatty liver disease that involves inflammation of the liver. NASH can also progress to advanced scarring (cirrhosis) and liver failure. The effects of NAFLD are similar to the damage caused by excessive alcohol use.
A swollen belly, dilated blood vessels under your skin, larger-than-normal breasts in men, red palms, yellow eyes and skin, due to a condition called jaundice, are some common symptoms of NASH or cirrhosis.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, consulting a doctor can help you in early diagnosis and treatment of liver disease.
Specific foods that may help people with fatty liver disease include:
garlic
A study in Advanced Biomedical Research found that garlic powder supplements helped reduce body weight and body fat mass in people with NAFLD.
Omega-3 fatty acid rich food
In the research article “Effects of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Meta-Analysis,” intake of omega-3 fatty acids may improve liver fat and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Salmon, flax seeds, sardines and walnuts are high in omega-3 fatty acids.
Green tea
Antioxidants in green tea can help improve symptoms of fatty liver.
Broccoli
Whole vegetables are beneficial for people dealing with fatty liver disease. Prolonged consumption of broccoli can prevent fat accumulation in the liver
I am protein
Soy protein contains antioxidants called isoflavones, which help reduce body fat and increase our insulin sensitivity.
