Suryakumar Yadav delivered a 360-degree masterclass with a standout century as England beat India by 17 runs in the third T20 International in Nottingham on Sunday.
David Malan’s 39-ball 77 saw England put India’s second string attack to the sword and finish with a mammoth total of 215 for seven.
Suryakumar (117 off 55 balls) kept India in the hunt with his class effort but lacked support from the other batsmen while chasing the huge target. India’s innings ended at 198 for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs.
India won the three-match series 2-1 with wins in Southampton and Birmingham. Struggling at 31 for the loss of three wickets in five overs, India fell back early in the run chase.
Openers Rohit Sharma (11), Rishabh Pant (1) were dismissed cheaply and it was another failure for Virat Kohli (11) who was caught at cover trying to hit a third successive hit off the bowling of David Willey for a four and a straight six. .
Suryakumar brought India back into the game with a 119-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer (28 off 23 balls), who was a spectator to his partner’s brilliance for the bulk of the partnership.
As he often does, Suryakumar toyed with the opposition bowlers and picked his shots around the ground.
The highlights of his brilliant innings were two lofted square drives from pacers Richard Gleeson and Chris Jordan that went for sixes.
He became the fifth Indian to score a century in T20 Internationals by opening the face of the bat and guiding a willy off a low full toss between backward point and short third man.
His innings included 14 fours and half a dozen sixes.
Suryakumar single-handedly reduced the equation to 66 off 30 balls and the partners were out at the other end.
Earlier, captain Jos Buttler (18 off 9 balls) and Jason Roy (27 off 26 balls) excelled as England scored 52 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in six overs. Malan and Liam Livingstone (42 not out 29) then put on an 84-run partnership to set the stage for a huge score.
With the series already sealed, India rested star all-rounder Hardik Pandya along with Jasprit Bumrah, in-form Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal.
A power-packed England batting line-up that had disappointed in the first two games saw India’s next generation cleaner. Ravi Bishnoi took just two wickets for 30 runs in four overs in a typical bowling performance.
Buttler punished the inexperienced Umran Malik in his short spell, collecting two fours and a six to score 17 runs in the Indian opener.
Avesh Khan fakes Buttler with a slow ball played on the stumps.
After Roy Malik was caught behind off, Malan changed gears and played the right cricket shots.
He took maximum spinners comfortably and was quick to pull and cut against the pacers.
In five sixes, Malan hit a slog sweep off Ravindra Jadeja at square leg and a low full toss from Avesh to cow corner.
As he often does, Livingstone hit four sixes and Harry Brook (19 balls) and Chris Jordan (11 balls) combined to take England past 200.
Livingstone was brought to life when Virat Kohli dropped him in the deep.
England scored 129 runs in the last 10 overs.
Malik leaked the most runs for India as he finished with a score of 56 from four overs.
