Former England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan wants his successor Jos Buttler to send a strong message to the dressing room ahead of the second ODI against India at Lord’s on Thursday.

England lost by 10 wickets to India in the first ODI at London’s Kennington Oval. England were all out for just 110 as Jasprit Bumrah took 6/19 as Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Morgan said: “I know what it’s like. “It’s not good – you focus inwards, not outwards. But with Jose having previous experience playing and leading, he will see this as an opportunity in that changing room to reiterate a very clear and strong message about where they are. They are going, what are they doing.”

“People will be in that changing room and want to leave, but that’s lead time.”

Jason Roy, Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Liam Livingstone were ducked out. Captain Buttler top-scored with 30, making it England’s lowest score in ODIs.

Morgan, who led England to 2019 World Cup glory, stressed the importance of delivering a clear message to the team. Since taking over as full-time captain, Buttler has lost the T20I series 1-2 and the first ODI in the ongoing 50-over series.

“You can give someone a great message and if they don’t hear it, it won’t go anywhere. But if you lose, I guarantee you everyone in the dressing room will. A clear message from your boss at times like this, it’s very important for your senior players to carry it through.”
