All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday walked out of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office after a 7-hour interrogation in the coal smuggling case.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s son-in-law Abhishek Banerjee reached the agency’s office at the CGO complex in Salt Lake, near Kolkata, around 11 am.
A five-member team of ED reached Kolkata on Thursday night to interrogate Abhishek Banerjee.
This is the third time that the Enforcement Directorate is interrogating him in the coal scam case.
Meanwhile, the Enforcement Department has also issued a notice to Abhishek Banerjee’s sister-in-law Maneka Gambhir for questioning on September 5 in the same case.
Maneka Gambhir has been asked to appear before the central agency at its New Delhi office.
What is Coal Scam Case?
The ED registered the case under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) based on a November 2020 FIR registered by the CBI alleging a multi-crore rupee coal looting scam related to East Coal Mines in Gunustoria and Khajora regions of West Bengal. and around Asansol.
Local coal director Anup Majhi alias Lala is said to be the prime suspect in the case. The ED said TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee was the beneficiary of funds derived from this illegal trade. He has denied all the allegations.
