Date, History and Significance of Kojagari Puja


Happy Sharad Purnima 2022: After Durga Puja, Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is an important festival in the eastern parts of the country, in the states of West Bengal, Assam and Odisha. As the name suggests, this day is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and is celebrated on the full moon day of the Ashwin lunar month of the Hindi calendar.

In the rest of the country, Kojagari Puja or Bengal Lakshmi Puja is known as Sharad Purnima and is celebrated on Amavasya Tithi during Diwali.

Kojagari Puja 2022: Date and Time

According to Panchangam, this year Kojagari Puja falls on October 9. Purnima Tithi starts at 03.41 am on October 9 and ends at 02.25 pm on October 10. The auspicious moment for Kojagiri is from 11:50 PM on October 9. till 12:30 am.

Kojagari Puja: Significance

On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is believed to revolve around the Earth’s orbit and relieve all the pains and sufferings of her devotees. It is also said that whoever stays awake through this night will be blessed with good health and wealth by Goddess Lakshmi.

Mathura and its surrounding areas of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, popularly known as Brij region, celebrate this festival as Ras Purnima. It is believed that on this day Lord Krishna performed the Maharasula dance with his gopis.

Devotees worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Lakshmi on Sharad Purnima. To find a suitable match, unmarried girls fast on this day to please Lord Vishnu in different parts of the country.

Kojagari Puja or Sharad Purnima is celebrated by devotees by making sweet Payasam and placing it in the moonlight. The next day, the payasam is distributed to all the family members as a sacred offering.
