CUET 2022: New exam pattern, admit card error makes students nervous

The central university entrance exam, which is mandatory for undergraduate admission in central universities in the country, poses a problem to aspirants and their parents alike. Most of the students are facing errors in CUET 2022 admit cards and are nervous about the new exam pattern.

Roshni is one of the activists facing similar difficulties. Her access to computers was limited and now she faces the daunting challenge of appearing for the six-and-a-half-hour exam session online.

A total of 86 universities, including Delhi University, will take admissions based on CUET this year, but lakhs of students are not sure about the correct pattern and question format.

Nearly 15 lakh candidates will appear for the exam on Friday. India Today spoke to some students who are still trying out a strategy to approach this computer-based exam. Samarth, a student from a government school in Jharkhand, told India Today that he was not sure how he would fare through the computer-based exam and the different sessions.

“In a classroom situation, we are used to answering on papers and although we have worked with OMR papers, we have never given such an online test,” he said.

Different dates for same subjects

One of the most common complaints is about the scheduling of the exam. Students complain that the whole concept behind CUET is to provide a level playing field to all boards.

Akshita, a student from a private school in Delhi, said she now has to appear for a set of lessons on Saturday. Meanwhile, her cousin’s sister will appear for the same subjects in August. He said this was a disadvantage as he did not have time to prepare for lessons.

Multiple lessons in one day

Akshat told India Today that while he can handle the long exam, he needs to prepare for multiple subjects that will be tested in a single day.

Confusion about the selection process

Although the National Testing Agency (NTA) has come up with some mock tests, students are not sure about the difficulty and pattern of the question papers. In field-based subjects, the duration of the exam will be 45 minutes. A student has to answer 40 out of 50 questions. A student can appear in a maximum of six domain-specific subjects, while one can opt for two languages and a general examination consisting of 75 questions, in which a student has to answer 60 questions in one hour.

During the pandemic, there was a 30% reduction in the curriculum of various subjects. Now the students don’t know that will happen.

Two sessions, two different exam centers

Many students have said that two different exam centers have been allotted for two sessions. A student named Hardik Vyas got Jaipur and Bikaner as centers for two sessions in one day.

Although the UGC chairman on Tuesday claimed that 98% students have been offered the center of their choice, students say it is not. Meanwhile, many admit cards do not have the name of the center.

The National Examinations Agency (NTA) announced last week that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), or CUET-UG, will be held from July 15 to August 10.

A total of 44 central universities, 12 state universities, 11 associate universities and 19 private universities have applied to follow CUET for UG admissions in the academic session 2022-23.
