Indian head coach Rahul Dravid admitted this on Tuesday Jasprit Bumrah will be absent from the upcoming T20 World Cup He said the back injury is a “huge loss” for the team, but it opens the door for some other players to step up and perform.

The BCCI announced on Monday that pace spearhead Bumrah will miss the showpiece event in Australia after the Indian team, which is struggling in the death overs, has suffered a blow.

“Bumrah’s absence is a big loss, he’s a great player, but it happens, it’s an opportunity for someone else to stand up. We’ll miss him, his personality around the group,” Dravid said after India’s three-match T20I win. 2-1 series against South Africa.

“It’s nice to get the right results in both the series (against SA and Australia). In this format, you need luck, especially in close games. We didn’t have that in the Asia Cup, but there was some luck during the Australia series.”

India lost in the third and final T20 against South Africa They won the series 2-1 by 49 runs. They beat Australia by a similar margin earlier this month.

“We were able to rotate the squad a bit, so overall we’re happy with how it went.”

Talking about the team’s new aggressive batting approach, Dravid said, “We took a decision after the last T20 WC, sat down with Rohit, made a conscious effort to be positive.

“We have batsmanship that can play positively, we need to build our team with batting depth. We are happy to come forward.”

With the series in the bag ahead of Tuesday’s match, senior players Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have been rested. Rishabh Pant opened the innings and Dinesh Karthik was promoted to No.4 to get more time in the middle.

“Guys who haven’t batted much today got a chance to get some time. It’s tough for guys like Rishabh and Dinesh. It would be good if they both continue, they are batting beautifully,” Dravid said.

“Another 4-5 overs and it could have been very close. Happy with the way we carried on, Harshal and Deepak and the other guys.”
