Former World Cup-winning footballer Kaka, who will make his debut in the Berlin Marathon on Sunday, said he was “as excited as I am before football matches”. Kaka, who played for Real Madrid and AC Milan before retiring in 2017, said his father’s battle with Covid-19 inspired him to run the marathon.

“He was in hospital for 45 days,” Kaká said at the Berlin Marathon press conference on Friday. “Fortunately, he is with us today.” Kaka’s father and brother participate in the “family experience” of the marathon.

“He’s not running, he’s just walking, but we wanted him in this experience with us — it’s more of a family experience.” Kaka said marathons are unique as sporting events because enthusiasts can compete side-by-side with professionals.

“I’m very excited, but it’s totally different from those guys (referring to the experts), which is a really good thing about marathons.

“As an aspiring athlete, I can run and be on an equal footing with the professionals.

“It’s really special in marathons – then I can say that the best person in the marathon has run this time and I’m running with him at the same time.”

Kaka said he was hoping for a time of less than four hours.

“I want to run around 3 hours 40 minutes – if I feel good I can do more,” added the 2002 World Cup winner.
